THE IMPORTANCE OF VITAMIN D AND IMMUNE SYSTEM HEALTH

Sunshine. The feeling of the hot warm sun beating down on your skin can leave you feeling sensational. Other than getting a spectacular suntan, exposing your skin to sunshine can give you a healthy dose of vitamin D. This wonderful vitamin is a powerful immune system booster. If you keep your immune system strong, there is less of a chance you will get sick. It is really that simple.

Getting some sun also increases your serotonin levels and helps you stave off Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Sunlight can also help people with anxiety and depression.

Here are 4 simple tips for boosting your system with vitamin D.

1.Get your vitamin D levels checked. Many doctors do this as a normal part of a physical, but if your doctor doesn’t, it doesn’t hurt to ask. It’s a very simple blood test. As we age, our ability to absorb certain vitamins diminish causing us to have a deficiency.
2.Talk to your doctor about supplementation. According to the U.S. government, the recommended daily value is 400 IU, but doctors may recommend supplementing with more. I take between 1000-2000 IU during the winter months.
3.If you live in a warm climate, get outside more often. If you can get vitamin D from sun exposure, that’s the best way to go. Try to get 20 to 30 minutes of sun exposure each day.It takes at least 15 minutes in the sun to get a healthy dose of this vitamin.
4. Eat vitamin D rich foods. Fish, cheese and fortified foods all have vitamin D in small doses. Many cereals and brands of milk are fortified with vitamin D, so this is a great option if you want to avoid taking supplements.
